We conduct hundreds of clinical trials each year with federal, foundation and industry partners to detect, treat and prevent disease and to measure the effectiveness of novel medical devices. We are currently involved in more than 700 clinical trials. Trials are managed by top-level professionals; each study is led by a scientific researcher who is an expert in the disease area and has extensive research experience.

This center consists of nationally and internationally recognized clinical experts who specialize in drug development, prevention, early diagnosis, precision medicine and novel treatments in a wide variety of cancers from brain to leukemia.

The clinical expertise of Wake Forest Baptist includes research in areas from atherosclerosis, heart failure and hypertension to interventional cardiology, cardiac stem cell therapy and vascular imaging. The Heart & Vascular Center coordinates clinical research with patients, supporting advancements in anesthesia in heart surgery, gene therapy treatments for vascular disease and new technologies to treat heart valve disease.

Clinical research in digestive disorders, inflammatory bowel and liver diseases, pancreas and gallbladder disease at Wake Forest Baptist is supported by the Digestive Health Center, which houses the region’s only GI Neuromuscular Center, and an outpatient GI Consultation Clinic.

Researchers in the Section on Infectious Disease are nationally and internationally recognized for their work on HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, bloodborne pathogens and biomarker analysis. Clinical trials draw from the Infectious Diseases Specialty Clinic (IDSC), one of the largest infectious diseases clinics in the state.

Pediatrics

Clinical research at the Medical Center focuses on critical care for respiratory and gastroenterology, congenital cardiology, pediatric oncology and orthopaedics and draws from the only children’s hospital in northwest North Carolina. The Brenner Children’s Hospital—a major referral center for the region and surrounding states—admits more than 4,500 children each year, treated by over 140 full-time pediatric faculty.

Our Patient Population

Wake Forest Baptist operates an integrated enterprise of educational and research facilities, hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers and primary and specialty care services. For clinical trials, our investigators can pull from a sizable regional patient population through these entities, including surrounding states for some clinical studies.

Anchored by an 885-bed, tertiary care hospital, community hospitals and affiliated partners, Wake Forest Baptist is a nationally ranked regional clinical health system. The network encompasses the Brenner Children’s Hospital, the Comprehensive Cancer Center, a Level I trauma center and three community hospitals. Our investigators can recruit from these entities for clinical research on a multitude of conditions and disease states.
