Wake Forest University was named in the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents for 2015. The list recognizes both the importance of patents in academic innovation and the work that universities like Wake Forest do in producing new technologies that improve the human condition.
Universities are ranked by the number of utility patents received in a calendar year based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. If multiple universities are on a patent, only the first assignee on the printed patent is counted.
Other universities recognized for their achievements in academic innovation include institutions such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Yale University and Tufts University.
The Top 100 list is published annually by the National Academy of Inventors, a nonprofit member organization that recognizes and encourages patent holders, in partnership with the Intellectual Property Owners Association, a trade association for the owners of intellectual property rights.
